Growth
Conclusion: new species. In our "Growth" series, we take you on the journey of the gerbera; from the very first seed to the colorful gerbera that ends up in your store. In this blog you will read about the final step in this process: the introduction of the newest varieties. In addition, you will be introduced to the latest gerbera varieties from Summit Gerbera.
Transport
Once the new varieties have been bred and grown, the brand new gerberas are transported. The striking flowers are packed and transported in such a way as to preserve their freshness and quality. As a result, the gerberas are still looking their best when they arrive at your flower shop, and your customers will be able to enjoy these eye-catchers for a long time.
Traditionally, the new varieties are available in mid-September. Florists can find and order the newest varieties in the Van der Plas webshop from the first week of September.

The latest gerberas from Flourishing Partner Summit Gerbera are now available in Van der Plas' webshop. With 19 new germinis and 12 new gerberas, there is again plenty of choice to surprise your customers with distinctive flowers. Of the 31 new varieties, the Tompouce, Flamazing, Punky Irma and Michelle in particular stand out in a positive way.
Leen Weerheim, co-owner of Nursery De Zuidplas, recently welcomed Michelle to his greenhouses as a new gerbera variety. "What is particularly striking about this flower is its unique color," Leen says. "The center is a soft pink, then the color gradually turns to white on the petals. It is a hue that was not yet available for the gerbera. The light pink color transitioning to pure white makes this variety very suitable for a field bouquet combined with lilac and pale pink shades."
Big heart
Tom van Leeuwen, co-owner of Klondike Gardens, has already grown and harvested some of the new varieties of Summit Gerbera. One of the new germini that has caught his positive eye is the Tompouce, a flower with a large yellow center with a slight green tint. Combined with the orange petals with a very light yellow tip, it is a very striking appearance. "The Tompouce is a high-quality flower with a bulky center and a sturdy stem. This variety looks particularly good in a 50-centimeter bouquet with light pink and purple flowers or, on the contrary, a colorful bouquet with different colors."
Flaming appearance
New varieties are also available among the specialties. "Within this category, the Punky Irma really is outstanding," says Tom. "This is a spider with a black center and magenta petals. The Punky Irma stands out because it has a slightly larger and chunkier flower than other spiders. The shape combined with the color makes it a very exclusive flower. On top of that, it is a resilient species with a sturdy base. This makes the Punky Irma perfect to use as an eye-catcher in flower creations that need to last a little longer."
